I don’t know about you, but ever since I became obsessed with LinkedIn, I started to slack on keeping my resume up to date. As soon as I was accepted to AMPLIFY, they requested my resume. I scrambled to put something together before the conference. Needless to say, I had much to learn during Megan Paone’s presentation about Resumes in the 21st Century.
A big takeaway for me was “quantify, quantify, quantify” and this goes for both your paper resume and your online career profiles. Employers want to know about results. When it comes to bullet points, use the CAR method. Challenge, Action, Results. Do not be afraid to frame your volunteer expertise in the same way you would a paid position. Employers actually don’t care what you were paid or if you were paid, they just want to know you grew your skills and kicked ass.
Fun fact: Did you take a career break, maybe to stay at home with a newborn? This my friends is what our friend Megan calls a “Domestic Engineer.” How much more fitting is that than the standard SAHM?
